Yakushima (Japan) Shiratani
Forest of Shiratani Unsuiko

Show place on world map

There are landscapes in which one feels excessively large and therefore as though one is on a journey in which every destination can be reached with a couple of small steps. And there are regions in which one feels smaller than when one is elsewhere. The forest of Shiratani Unsuiko is definitely a landscape in which one shrinks. That’s probably got to do with its mighty cedars, called Sugi, some of which have stood here for over 3,000 years. Or, perhaps it has to do with the moss that visitors to this forest are sucked into.
