Dakar, Route de la Corniche Est

Scene 3

Maille imagined the condition of the fish swimming in the waters: their scaly, slippery little bodies swimming close together in an increasingly shrinking space, touching each other, pressing against each other, closer and closer – until in the end the lack of oxygen simply took their breath away. It must have been quite a similar situation at the time on Goree: this island located near the shoreline of Dakar, which, over the centuries, had played an incredibly dirty role in the Triangle trade between Europe, Africa and America.
