Street from Puerto Navarino to Puerto Williams

Scene 10

Maille allowed himself to be driven in a minibus from Port Navarino to Port Williams, the main city of the commune Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). The street was torn and full of potholes. There were no houses, only deserted huts; cows stared at the cars as though they were a heavenly apparition – and their calves sprang away in panic from the automobiles into the bushes. Now and then a fishing vessel could be seen out in the bay.

They stopped shortly at an old cemetery: white crosses in a flower field with a vast view over the Beagle Canal – «Cementerio Indigena Mejillones», the graveyard of the Mossel Bay, certainly the very last of the last resting places on this continent.
