In the meantime, Hektor Maille's cook Odette Sissay was in the secret agent's bathroom, getting ready for a trip into the Santa Lemusan capital: she pinned up her hair and put on some lipstick – a dark orange that hardly differed from the natural colour of her mouth. She checked the cellar door, walked through the garden, flung a piece of bread into the little pond croaking with frogs, climbed into the old Peugeot, drove out of the gate and cruised slowly through Senpuav, and then out of the north exit of the village.
