Scene 5

He dived into a swimming pool and held his breath longer than usual. He imagined that Marie had had his initials tattoed on her stomach, but he knew full well that they were actually those of Odette Sissay, his cook. While he dived around, it seemed as though the water had mysteriously risen and expanded: the walls were blurred and, suddenly, he felt as though the whole world had turned into a swimming pool, a world-encompassing basin that had no rim on which a glass of white wine could stand. It was consequently of no significance at which spot he surfaced. Every place was the same place. The Congo was also in the middle of the Vallis Alps; the luxurious swimming pool also a snow-melt pond with frog spawn.
