Palmas (Brazil) Jogos Indígenas – Avenida Joaquim Teotônio Segurado (map)
Friday, 23 October 2015
Today, the first world championship of the indigenous peoples will begin. At the entrance to the arena spoons made of tropical wood, pearl chains, bird pipes and feather-ornaments will be on sale. One can allow decorative patterns to be pained in carbon black on one’s skin, or interact with evangelical missionaries, who press a small copy of the Bible into your hand. There are also demonstrations: some are protesting against a new law which the Senate could enforce in the shadow of the games; others want simply to be allowed inside the stadium – although they have not been invited. I once dreamt of being a Red Indian. Today, this phase of my life has never before seemed more distant. And one no longer says Red Indian.
