Moscow, in a taxi, East of the City Center

Scene 12

The driver seemed to have undergone a sudden personality change. Earlier, as he had driven Maille across Moscow, he had appeared most phlegmatic; now that there was a lady in the backseat, he was all animated and raced along as if they had to escape from a bank robbery. The lady was, however, not in the least impressed.

«Jenadi was very careful. He was always scared that somebody would steal his ideas. We were therefore not always familiar with all the branches of ORM-Research – and to this day I don’t know exactly what the goal of the whole operation was. I just know that it had something to do with the cyclone or perhaps with its aftermath.»
«And what have you done research in?»
«I've specialised in quantum forms within enclosed systems.»
«Sounds interesting.»
«One encloses two photons and then erases one of them with a third photon. The instant the second photon is extinguished, the first one takes on all the properties of the second one. That means that there now exists an exact copy of the erased photon – but in another place.»
«And what does that have to do with the weather?»
«Yes, that's a question I've asked myself over and over again. I cannot answer that however much I would like to. My research took place in a meaningless space, and that caused me much frustration.»
